Now draw a straight line from the bottom end of the oval straight up and through the other side of the top of the oval. Extend that same line a bit beyond the boundaries of the oval in both top and bottom directions. This will serve as axis points for the head and legs.
Again, very lightly sketch with your pencil a smaller oval for the head, following the axis line that you drew through the torso oval. Do the same for the legs at the bottom. For arms, draw a horizontal line about two-thirds of the way up the torso oval, and attach the arms to either side of that axis line. Use a series of very lightly drawn crossed lines for joints and movement. Now you’re free to fill in the details as you choose. Make it as realistic or as wacky as you like. Remember, its your cartoon, you do as you like.
Experiment with this first character, change it up, dress it up or down, give it some actions to do. Draw it walking, running, sitting, standing. Practice facial expressions. As you continue to practice learning how to draw cartoons , your character will develop a personality all its own. And that’s when you know you are ready to use your character in a comic strip, or cell, with other characters you’ve invented or simply in a still setting. Imagine its voice in your head, and remember, anything can talk in cartoon form!
